This is a variety of push-on protectors for woodturning chisels.

If, like me, you tote your woodturning tools to various venues in a toolbox, where they can rattle around and crash into each other and the end of the toolbox, you may find these valuable to help protect the sharp cutting edge that you've taken time & care to produce on each of your chisels and gouges.

Each protector has an internal end stop that fits against the lower part of the bevel and prevents the cutting edge from touching the end of the protector. Some protectors therefore have a required orientation, which is printed on the side of the protector.

I have printed all of the attached files in TPU and fitted the protectors to the relevant chisel, gouge or tool. There is a fair degree of stretch in TPU that allows for a snug fit, even if the size isn't quite correct. For the designs that aren't obvious from the name, I'll attempt to explain here what each protector is intended to fit:

Dovetail Tool.stl

Crown 267W Dovetail Scraper

(see http://www.crownhandtools.ltd.uk/page54.html)

10mm Neg Rake Scraper.stl 19mm Neg Rake Scraper.stl 13mm Oval Skew.stl

Jason Breach set of 2 negative rake scrapers and an oval skew

(see https://www.axminstertools.com/henry-taylor-jason-breach-box-making-set-of-3-717440)

quarter-inch Angled Parting Tool.stl

This a tool that I reground from an old turning chisel. It is a 1/4" wide parting tool that is reground with an angle to allow an external dovetail to be easily cut into a spigot. This protector should fit a 1/4" by ~1/2" parting tool.

Update 30Apr23

Simon Hope 5/8" double-ended bowl gouge added (standard grind & fingernail - they're both the same!). This is listed as ½", but measures 0.63" diameter!

Printer Brand:

Anycubic

Printer:

Kossel

Rafts:

No, but some need a brim

Supports:

Yes (brim)

Resolution:

0.2mm (or 0.15mm for 0.25mm nozzle)

Filament:

eSun TPU

White/Natural

Notes:

The TPU that I used has a shore hardness of 95. Other, similar TPUs may work too. Printing with "avoid crossing perimeters" cleans up the inside of each protector and reduces the need to clean them out.

For me, it was best to print all the protectors vertically, with the open end uppermost, and to use supports for those that have an angled base. They will print at an angle but print better if printed vertically. I used a brim to print the smaller protectors to hold them to the print bed.
