Description

PDF

This is a simple organizer box with a small drawer. I designed this box as a study to see how well a drawer with two rounded rails will work. Actually pretty good. 😄 That's why I am sharing this design, as it might be useful.

(update 2021-11-08: added models for variant B and C)

The Design

The design consists of four parts: There is the main body of the box, which is printed from the back upwards, the body of the drawer and two front panels. All these parts have keys with a really tight fit. Usually, if you slide the front panels into their positions, they will be held there without glue.

Dimensions

As this was a design study, the original dimensions are a little bit random.

How to Print the Box

I designed this model to be printed with PLA, with a layer height of 0.2mm. While it will print with different layer heights and other materials, I can not guarantee if the printed parts will fit and the drawer will work.

  • Print the template with PLA.
  • Select 0.2mm layer height.
  • Use the quality setting.
  • The flat side of the model goes to the printer bed.
  • Do not scale the model!

You will find two Prusa Slicer project examples in the file section. Use these as a starting point, where you can see the correct orientation of all parts for the print.

Assembly

Start with the top panel and carefully slide it over the keys on the front:

Now, carefully press the panel down, avoid tilting it.

You hear a clicking sound if the panel fits, and the upper border and side borders are perfectly flush with the main body of the box.

Next, repeat the same procedure with the drawer:

Carefully press the panel into the keyed slots.

The border of the panel should sit perfectly in the groove of the drawer body.

Now, slide the drawer into the box:

Voila!

About the Photos of the Real Print

The photos above are variant A, printed with the “Archimedian chords” pattern on the front, with Prusament PLA Blend - Lime. Sadly, because Prusa Slicer does not print the “Archimedian chords” in the same order as it does with the “monotonic” pattern, the front looks nice but could look way better.

I did a second print with the monotonic pattern, which created a wonderful finish.
